The Society provides support for its Members to engage with the public on all aspects of physiology through its Outreach Grants scheme. Events run using funding from the scheme provide a great opportunity to promote an awareness and understanding of physiology. They also benefit the researchers themselves, giving them a new perspective on their research area, improved communications skills and greater confidence to engage with a wider audience.
Outreach Grants provide up to £1000 per calendar year for Ordinary Members, Affiliates and Associate Members of The Society to run an outreach or public engagement activity. This could be a schools visit, a Meet the Scientists event at a science museum or an event at a science festival. It could be a stand-alone activity, or organised as part of a wider event such as Brain Awareness Week.
Grants provide funding for speakers’ and demonstrators’ travel; and accommodation and resources such as printed leaflets or demonstration kits. We cannot, however, provide funding for honoraria.
We are open to any ideas from you as to how physiologists can engage with the public. If you would like to discuss your idea with us before submitting an application, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The small print
As part of your application, you will be asked to outline the aims and objectives of your activity, the intended audience and fully justify all requested costs. We encourage you to find additional sponsorship to run your event, where necessary.
The Society asks that it is acknowledged on any promotional material, websites and at the event itself. We also ask that you provide an evaluation report of your event and submit it to us within one month of your event taking place, and that you fill in this project evaluation and learning form.
If your application for funding is successful, we will send you material to help with marketing. We are also happy to help you develop your idea.
To help your application, we have compiled a list of resources for running and evaluating public engagement and outreach activities.
