Bridging the "valley of death": improving the commercialisation of research

The difficulty and problems facing translation of research into commercial application is a recurring topic of discussion. In the context of the recently published Innovation and Research Strategy for Growth (pdf) document, focussing on how the Government will work with both academia and the private sector to ensure private sector growth, the House of Commons Science and Technology Committee initiated a consultation on the commercialisation of research. The Physiological Society responded to this through the Society of Biology, and the joint response will be found here shortly when the evidence is published by the Science and Technology Committee.

Working with the Society of Biology, The Physiological Society responded to the UCAS Admissions Process Review.

December 2011
Higher Education in STEM Subjects

The House of Lords Science and Technology Committee launched an inquiry on Higher Education in STEM subjects, which included a consultation phase. We launched a call for evidence and produced a response from The Physiological Society. This response will appear here shortly, when the House of Lords has released the submissions.

Research Excellence Framework (REF)

As part of on-going work on REF, HEFCE launched a consultation on the draft criteria and working methods of the REF 2014 panels. At the end of January 2012, HEFCE produced the final documentation relating to the criteria and working methods of the REF 2014 panels. The Physiological Society expressed their views through the Society of Biology in the creation of a joint response submitted by the Royal Society of Chemistry, Institute of Physics and Society of Biology.

Expansion of Society of Biology Accreditation Programme

The Society of Biology is currently piloting an accreditation scheme for in vivo and biochemistry degrees. Their consultation is investigating how Member Organisations feel this scheme should be expanded.

Transposition of EU Directive 2010/63

The European Directive 2010/63 on the ‘Protection of Animals in Scientific Experimentation’ will come into force on 1 Jan 2013. The United Kingdom is required to ensure laws are in place covering the provisions of the new EU Directive by 10 November 2012. The Home Office launched a consultation on how this Directive should be transposed into UK law. The Physiological Society’s Policy Committee worked with the UK Bioscience Sector Coalition to produce a response.

In addition, The Society submitted its own response which can be found here.
