Research grants
This grant scheme is intended to support physiologists in their first permanent academic position. Funds of up to £10,000 are available for a 12-month period, to provide support for their research or to provide seed-funding to start a new project.
Funds can be used to conduct pilot studies, develop a new technique or finalise a project. Funding cannot be used to fund PhD studentships or pay staff, to pay for attending conferences, personal salary or general office costs. However, the grants offer flexibility with costs such as experimental consumables, small pieces of equipment and animal costs are all eligible.
The closing date for applications for the 2013 scheme was February 28.
The small print
The scheme is available to early career physiologists who are less than two years into their first permanent academic position (at a UK institution) by the time the grant starts. Applicants must hold a PhD and be in-post before the start of the award. Please note, current fellowship holders are ineligible.
Applicants can either be an Ordinary or Affiliate Member of The Society, or have previously presented a talk or a poster at a Society meeting. Applications from non-members need to be sponsored by an Ordinary Member of The Society.
Applications should be physiological in nature and should not overlap with existing funding. The applicant’s host institution must be willing to administer the award, and a maximum of two awards will be made to each host institute.
Each application will be assessed based on the scientific quality and feasibility of the proposal, the calibre of the applicant and possibility that the proposal will result in future funding. The suitability of the research environment and the level of collaboration with other researchers will also be considered.
Successful applicants are expected to take up their funding in September 2013. Those who receive awards will be asked to submit an end of grant report and a financial audit of spending no later than three months after the end of the grant. If such a report is not submitted the holder will be deemed ineligible for any other funding from The Physiological Society. Any funds not used at the end of the grant period must be returned to The Society.
The deadline for the 2013 scheme has now passed.
