Rapid actions of aldosterone on epithelial ion transport

Aldosterone is most important hormone regulating blood pressure. Its receptor (MR) and  regulated sodium ion channel  (ENaC) in the distal nephron are drug targets in controlling hypertension. The relatively fast regulation of ENaC and other epithelial membrane transporters by aldosterone is an area of intense interest in the renal and cardiovascular fields given its clinical implications. Rapid aldosterone actions which are transduced via MR are shown to affect novel protein kinase signalling, membrane trafficking, cross-talk with other receptors and genomic responses. This symposium addresses the major controversies and discoveries in the rapid actions of aldosterone regulating epithelial membrane transport.
