Young physiologists' bursary scheme
Funding of up to £200 is available to encourage and enable early-career scientists (undergraduates, postgraduates and recently qualified postdocs) to attend their first Physiological Society meeting. The scheme is open to Members and non-Members of The Society who wish to attend The Society’s Main Meeting or one of our Themed Meetings.
Up to 50 bursaries are awarded each year for The Main Meeting and up to 10 for each Themed Meeting.
Please note that funding is available if you wish to attend an event and are not presenting work. If you are presenting and are also a Member, please apply for a travel grant. If you are not a Member, then do consider joining to benefit from being able to apply for a travel grant.
The funding provided by this scheme covers the following:
- Meeting registration
- Standard class rail/flight/bus travel, or equivalent
- The Society Dinner and/or Welcome Reception
- Up to three nights’ accommodation costs in student hostels, hotels, guest houses, etc.
- The Society is unfortunately not able to reimburse additional travel expenses, e.g. taxis or subsistence
The small print

- You are not presenting any work
- You are an undergraduate, postgraduate or recently qualified postdoc
- You have not previously received funding to attend a Society Meeting from this scheme or a travel grant
Apply for a Young physiologists' bursary
Register online for the Meeting, and then email events@physoc.org stating that you wish to be considered for a bursary.
Please note that bursaries cannot be guaranteed, therefore all fees are payable in advance of the Meeting. The application deadline for each Meeting is the early bird deadline. Awards are made on a first-come first-served basis.
Details on all Society Meetings can be found on the Meetings web pages.
Further information
- Society staff will acknowledge receipt of your interest in the Scheme within five working days.
- Bursaries cannot be allocated in advance of the Meeting.
- Award of a Young Physiologists’ Bursary (YPB) will not prejudice a further application in the same year for an Affiliate Travel Award. However, The Society will not award a YPB and an Undergraduate Associate Travel Grant to the same individual to attend the one meeting.
- Where registration fees apply, these will automatically be deducted from the bursary and will be refunded in the post Meeting claim.
- Recipients must keep relevant receipts to claim back post Meeting. We recommend that a photocopy of receipts is retained.
To claim, recipients must complete the relevant form, and email it before the Meeting. Please send it, together with receipts to events@physoc.org. We aim to acknowledge your receipts and claim within five working days.
If you have any further questions, please email events@physoc.org.
