Contribution of physiology education and training to the UK economy
Our new report, published in collaboration with Academy for Healthcare Science, is an independent economic analysis of the contribution of physiology education and training to the UK economy.
The report was launched in the Houses of Parliament on 7 June 2022.

The Society, along with the Academy for Healthcare Science, has also developed a series of supplementary fact sheets for each of the devolved administrations in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. These fact sheets look at national job postings data and project the future requirements of the job market by 2030 for graduates who study courses with a core physiological component.
These data are designed to complement the UK-wide report and provide some additional insight into the differing labour market requirements across the four nations.

What are the main findings?
The independent analysis conducted by Emsi Burning Glass, reports that the accumulation of graduates who study courses of which physiology is a core component currently employed in the workforce amounts to £22.6 billion in added income in the UK’s economy each year. This is equivalent to supporting over 777,200 average salary jobs annually.
Additionally, the social and public purse benefits to the UK from students included in the analysis of AY 2018-19 students equal a present value of £35.6 billion.

The report features case studies from a range of universities and businesses from across the UK, demonstrating the wider benefits for students and graduates, the national economy, and wider society. This report is aimed at students considering physiology courses, universities and colleges that are creating or expanding physiology departments, and policymakers responsible for funding and supporting these endeavours. Additionally, the report shines a light on the different career options available to physiology graduates, with a particular focus on healthcare sciences.
