Thrombocytopenia is classically defined as a platelet count of less than 150,000/L.1, 2 Thrombocytopenia is commonly observed during pregnancy3. Whether thrombocytopenia is associated with any specific pregnancy related clinical conditions is not clear. Therefore this study investigated the frequency of thrombocytopenia in commonly observed pregnancy related complications.200 consecutive singleton mothers in 20th week of gestational period were enrolled into the study. Based on the clinical diagnosis they were divided into 6 groups: Pregnancy induced hypertension ( n = 84); gestational diabetes (n = 88); Anemia (n = 42); Fetal distress syndrome ( n = 52) ; Oligohydramnios ( n = 76) and Polyhydramnios ( n = 15). Frequency of subjects with and without thrombocytopenia was compared in each subgroup. Statistical analysis was done using Chi-square test. Frequency of thrombocytopenia was significantly higher in singleton mothers with pregnancy induced hypertension (with thrombocytopenia: n = 59; without thrombocytopenia: n = 25; p < 0.0001). There was no significant difference in frequency of thrombocytopenia in mothers with anemia, gestational diabetes, fetal distress syndrome, polyhydramnios and Oligohydramnios. Thrombocytopenia is mainly associated with pregnancy induced hypertension.Key words: Pregnancy related complications; thrombocytopenia; pregnancy induced hypertension
