Paper to be discussed:Functional reserve and sex differences during exercise to exhaustion revealed by post-exercise ischaemia and repeated supramaximal exercise (Martin-Rincon, M., Gelabert-Rebato, M., Perez-Valera, M., Galvan-Alvarez, V., Morales-Alamo, D., Dorado, C., Boushel, R., Hallen, J. and Calbet, J.A.L.), The Journal of Physiology; DOI: 10.1113/JP281293

The Journal of Physiology’s Virtual Journal Club meets online on the first and third Wednesday of each month. Each meeting explores a different paper, recently published in The Journal of Physiology. Discussions also consider best practice for publication. You can find out more about the Virtual Journal Club here.

Human exercise physiology is a topic that has been at the forefront of academic and public discourse for centuries. However, despite early reports of sex differences in human exercise physiology, the vast majority of human physiology research relates back to the “typical 70 kg man”. In this Virtual Journal Club, host Lewan Parker will discuss the importance of acknowledging sex differences in human exercise physiology, current research limitations, and aim to identify techniques to assist in improving future research methodology with authors Marcos Martin-Rincon and Jose Calbet, and panellists Severine Lamon, Kim Way, and Hannah Thomas.
