In this Virtual Journal Club, host Ian Darragh discussed a recent article entitled “Genetic and epigenetic regulation of skeletal muscle ribosome biogenesis with exercise” alongside leading authors Dr Vandré Figueiredo and Dr Kevin Murach, and Reviewing Editor for The Journal of Physiology, Dr Bettina Mittendorfer. This paper describes a time-course response for regulatory and transcript markers of ribosome biogenesis in response to acute resistance and aerobic exercise and reports on exercise induced methylation signals of c-myc regulated ribosomal DNA regions.
Darragh introduced an overview of the paper and his reasons for selecting it, before Dr Figueiredo and Dr Murach explained the motivation for the paper, the methodological approaches taken and what highlighted results meant for progressing collective understanding of exercise adaptation. Dr Mittendorfer outlined the elements of this paper which made this study acceptable for publication in The Journal. Questions were invited by attendees throughout the presentation and were discussed by the panel at the end.
The session ended with a 30-minute networking session where attendees were invited to informally discuss the session.
