What is the role of physiology and personalised medicine in meeting the health challenges facing the UK?

Join us in Parliament on 14 January 2025 to discuss this as we launch our new report ‘How can personalised prevention build an NHS fit for the future?’.

At the launch, in collaboration with the Parliamentary and Scientific Committee, you will hear from experts and politicians about the importance of physiological research and precision medicine in preventing poor health. This discussion is timely as it comes weeks before the Government launches its new plan for the NHS and just as The Physiological Society launches its new journal ‘The Journal of Precision Medicine: Health and Disease’.

What is precision medicine?

Precision medicine, a rapidly evolving field, allows for personalised treatments or interventions that improve outcomes and reduce side effects by targeting person-specific biomarkers, environmental and lifestyle factors.

Personalised prevention is a key element of precision medicine that aims to prevent the onset, progression and recurrence of disease by the adoption of targeted interventions that consider biological information, environmental and behavioural characteristics, socio-economic and cultural context of individuals. These interventions should be timely, effective, and equitable to maintain the best possible balance in lifetime health trajectory.

The UK Government has recently launched the Change NHS consultation to develop a plan which will set out how we will deliver an NHS fit for the future in England, to create ‘a truly modern health service designed to meet the changing needs of our changing population’. The development of this plan has been framed around three shifts; ‘focussing on preventing sickness, not just treating it; making better use of technology in health and care; and moving more care from hospitals to communities.

At our launch event, hear from experts and politicians about the importance of physiological research in preventing poor health and delivering precision medicine and personalised prevention in the NHS.

Why attend?

  • Hear from experts on the opportunities and challenges of delivering precision medicine in the NHS
  • Network and engage with fellow physiologists on their vital physiological research plays into the personalised prevention of ill health and long-term chronic health conditions.
  • Meet with MPs, Peers, and officers of the Parliamentary and Scientific Committee to share your research and its relevance to decision makers in Parliament.
