Paper discussed: Corticospinal recruitment of spinal motor neurons in human stroke survivors (Michael A. Urbin, Jennifer L. Collinger, George F. Wittenberg)The Journal of Physiology; DOI: 10.1113/JP281311

The Journal of Physiology’s Virtual Journal Club meets on the first and third Wednesday of each month. You can find out more about the Virtual Journal Club here.

In this Virtual Journal Club, host Dr Ainslie Johnstone, discussed the manuscript with author Dr Michael Urbin and The Journal of Physiology Reviewing Editor, Professor Charlotte Stagg.

Dr Johnstone introduced the paper – published this May in The Journal – and gave her reasons for selecting it for this virtual journal club. Dr Urbin then explained the rationale, methodology and major findings of the study. This was followed by a panel discussion on the implications of the findings in the context of motor recovery after a stroke, whether this approach may have utility as a stroke therapy, and further research questions that have been generated. Professor Stagg then advised on the key factors that made this study suitable for publication in The Journal of Physiology.

There was a 30-minute networking session immediately after the Virtual Journal Club meeting where attendees had the opportunity to meet and reflect on the conversations had during the meeting.
