The Communications Manager (Maternity Cover) is responsible for planning, co-ordinating, and evaluating our communications deliverables, including leading on messaging and our data-driven marketing approach. 

The Physiological Society

We promote physiology and support those working in the field by organising world-class scientific meetings, offering grants for research, collaboration and international travel, and by publishing the latest developments in our leading scientific journals, The Journal of Physiology, Experimental Physiology, and Physiological Reports. 

The position 

We are looking for a maternity cover for our Communications Manager. The Communications Manager delivers effective integrated communications plans to promote membership of The Society and to showcase our conferences, three journals and our science communication activities that raise the profile of physiology among the public and key stakeholders. 

The main areas of responsibility are: 

  • Strategic communications and coordination across the organisation
    Working with the Head of Strategy, Policy and Communications, coordinate communications activity across The Society to ensure a coherent and effective narrative to support our core aims. 
  • Marketing communications
    Develop and implement marketing communications plans for our membership, events and journals, working closely with the relevant staff teams. 
  • Raising physiology’s visibility
    Proactively identify creative opportunities to deliver our vision of physiology flourishing through promotion of the discipline and The Society through channels such as the media and working with other organisations. React quickly to current events, with the right content on the right channels at the right time.
  • Innovative content
    Design and deliver innovative content that makes us stand out.
  • Line management
    Line management of two Communications Officers. 

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for someone with a minimum of three years’ experience in media and communications. 

You will be innovative, creative and forward thinking, with strong communication, interpersonal and organisational skills.  

The position is a fixed term contract to cover maternity leave. Our head office is in London with flexible home working available.
