The Society is seeking candidates to get involved in a number of different areas, listed below. Members at any stage of their career are invited to apply.
Being a member of any Society committee or group provides you with an insight into how The Society works and an opportunity to influence activities and to help deliver the strategy. In return, you are given access to unique opportunities to develop your own profile, network and ultimately support your career goals.

Governance Committee
Finance
Reporting to Council and in accordance with the Financial delegations policy, the Finance Committee is responsible for overseeing all financial aspects of The Society to support its short and long-term ability to achieve its charitable objectives.
We are seeking a Member with the following skills and experience:
- Experience of financial management, scrutiny and planning
- Understanding of organisational risk
- Understanding of financial strategy
- Ability to understand a budget and accounts
- A collaborative approach and supportive nature

The Finance Committee will meet in person four times per year and may hold additional teleconferences if necessary. Consideration should be given to the timing of Board meetings. In addition, it may transact its business between meetings by email and other communications to ensure sufficient reporting mechanisms to Council. Candidates should check they are able to commit to the time requirements prior to application.
Advisory Committees
Conferences
The Conferences Committee is responsible for overseeing the delivery of The Society’s strategic priority on advancing physiology through our conferences: excellent science, wide and active participation, lasting impact. The goal of the Conferences strand of the strategy is to provide opportunities for researchers to present new work and get feedback from their peers; to make connections with other scientists; to learn about new research, techniques and ideas and to network with friends and colleagues.
We are seeking up to three Members with the following skills and experience:
- An Early Career Member: PhD, Postdoc or first faculty position level (non-professorial)
- A Member specialising in cardiac and vascular physiology
- A Member specialising in endocrinology

The Conferences Committee will meet in person twice a year and up to twice via teleconference if necessary. In addition, it may transact its business between meetings by email and other communications to ensure sufficient reporting mechanisms to Council. Candidates should check they are able to commit to the time requirements prior to application.
Education, Public Engagement and Policy Committee (EPEP)
The EPEP Committee is responsible for overseeing the delivery of The Society’s strategic priority on Engagement – to Engage for success – improving our two-way commitment and communication to increase recognition of the importance of physiology. The goal of the Engagement strand of the strategy is to increase awareness of physiology in order to strengthen the pipeline of physiologists across the discipline.
We are seeking one Member to join, who ideally has:
- An interest in policy
- Interest/experience related to research funding

EPEP meets in person twice a year and up to twice via teleconference if necessary. Members are also asked for contributions on specific tasks via email in between. Candidates should check they are able to commit to the time requirements prior to application.
Publications
The Publications Committee is responsible for overseeing the delivery of The Society’s strategic priority on Publications. The goal of the Publications strand of the strategy is to make our journals flagships for physiology, where any researcher is proud to publish.
We are seeking to recruit a Member who fulfils the following criteria:
- Is at an established/senior stage of career
- Research active with their own grants
- Has published in leading international journals as a corresponding author
- Has an interest in publishing
- Has an interest in Open Data and transparency
- Is a frequent international conference attendee
The Publications Committee will meet in person once a year and may hold a second meeting if necessary. Candidates should check they are able to commit to the time requirements prior to application.

Other Opportunities
History and Archives
The Society has a long tradition of being at the forefront of the life sciences in the promotion of academic excellence. As The Society works towards its 150th Anniversary, we are looking for Members to help us showcase the importance of physiology and the significant contributions Society’s Members have made to knowledge of biological systems and the treatment of disease. Join the History & Archives Group to help shape the activities leading up to this important milestone.
History and Archives promotes the appreciation and understanding of the history of The Society and of physiological science. It is also responsible for the maintenance of The Society’s historical records and overseeing the regular accrual of important records.
The Group will meet in person two times per year or via teleconference if necessary.
We are seeking up to four new Members that have:
- A record of academic achievement in physiology
- A demonstrated interest in, and appreciation for, the history of The Society
- An interest in communicating the history of The Society and of physiology
This group is also seeking a new Chair. Please state in your application if you are interested in this role. Applications from early career Members are also particularly encouraged. More details are available in the Terms of Reference.
Physiology News
The Physiological Society is seeking to appoint a Scientific Editor for its quarterly membership magazine, Physiology News (PN), ahead of the term of the current Scientific Editor finishing. This is an exciting opportunity to work with the Editorial Board to shape the direction of PN and develop engaging, high quality scientific content.
