Edward Carmeliet
(1930 – 2021)
The Society is saddened to hear of the death of Professor Edward Carmeliet. He passed on 5 April 2021 at the age of 91, just after retiring from a research career spanning the early 1950s to 2020. He was a pioneer in cardiac electrophysiology, who pursued a deeper understanding of the mechanisms underlying irregularities in heart rhythm.
Carmeliet was an active member of The Physiological Society, attending meetings and introducing his students to The Society. He was a member of the Editorial Board of The Journal of Physiology from 1980 to 1987 and remained an active reviewer throughout his life. In 1977, Carmeliet along with his friends Edouard Coraboeuf and Silvio Weidman, founded the European Working Group on Cardiac Cellular Electrophysiology. The meetings brought scientists together, encouraging discussion about ongoing projects to advance cardiovascular research and welcomed young researchers into the network.
Carmeliet’s rich legacy is discussed in more detail in his obituary in Physiology News.
