Variability, Physiological Variability and Individual Responses: A Practical Research Workshop
Variability is ubiquitous in physiological research, but we often choose to ignore it, hide it or remove it. This workshop will feature contributions from a small number of discipline experts, allowing a greater amount of time for the presenters to expand on key points. They will also give step-by-step guidance and provide practical worked examples of approaches to the assessment of variability covering a variety of experimental designs (and their strengths and weaknesses) and statistical methods.
09:40 Logical rigor vs. practical constraints - Worked examples for assessing interindividual variability and individual response in sports and exercise
Analysing interindividual variation (e.g., characterizing individual response to an intervention) is associated with specific methodological and statistical requirements that extend beyond the habitual requirements for group-based trials. However, in the context of sports and exercise it is typically not possible to implement them to their full extend. Fortunately, relative substitutes and amendments to common study designs and methods enable the development of practical “workarounds” for specific use cases. In this talk I will discuss some published examples from the fields of preventive and high-performance sport.
11:15 Responders, Context and Noise
The fact that a given stimulus may not elicit a similar response when applied to different individuals or contexts is relevant to most branches of science and medicine. However, human physiology research presents a distinct set of challenges and opportunities when considering differences within and between individuals. This session will explore how common experimental design issues in this field can cause problems and/or offer solutions for researchers interested in understanding variability in response. We will also explore how effective data visualisation can help to interpret and communicate the consistency of responses observed across a sample.
13:15 A little bit me a little bit you: Why overreacting to individual results when there is high intra-individuality is harmful
Parallel group trials are carried out to study an effect of treatment in order to inform the choice of treatment for patients not studied. This is trivially obvious but its consequences are sometimes overlooked when analysing n-of-1 trials. Just because we have some direct information on a patient does not mean that information on other is not relevant. We can improve our judgement of the effects of treatment on given individual by a judicious combination of personal and global information and to ignore global information can lead to poor decision-making. This session will cover shrunk and weighted estimates in within-subject studies.

We invite early career researchers, i.e., MSc or PhD, to submit an abstract of their research work for consideration in the afternoon session.
This early career focused session offers the opportunity to present your work which should specifically focus on how to investigate individual variation.
We encourage submission of work from any stage from conception to publication, including research ideas, research in the design phase, through to a variety of statistical approaches and finally to data analysis and presentation.
As this is a workshop, the content of your work should drive the discussion around individual variation, generate constructive feedback and encourage interaction from the audience.
The successful applicants will be paired with one of our experts and be guided through the process of presentation, preparation, and delivery. The idea being to provide a solid background in both the scientific knowledge and statistical approach to analysing individual variation. The expert pairing process also aims to overcome the typical fears associated with public professional speaking such that you may fully engage in the workshop armed with the knowledge that your work is sound and endorsed by an expert.
Those selected will receive free registration, an abstract award, a certificate of presentation and mentoring by one of the invited speakers.
