Education and Teaching Award
To support members wishing to develop new educational resources or conduct a piece of publishable educational research that addresses a key question in physiological education.

Who can apply?
- Members who have at least 3 years of assured funding in a teaching-focused position from the date at which grant award is made.
- Preference will be given to applicants in the first 5 years of their teaching career in higher education. This includes those within the first 5 years of shifting the focus of their contract to teaching and learning. All applicants must be based at an institution in the UK or Republic of Ireland. Applicants must be current members of The Physiological Society with a minimum of 2 years’ consecutive membership.
How much funding is available?
Up to £10,000 per award.
What can the funding be used for?
Funding can be used to produce new educational resources, or to conduct a piece of publishable educational research that addresses a key question in physiological education. Collaborative projects between higher education institutions and with The Physiological Society are particularly encouraged. This award is able to part-fund larger projects if justified.
The Society is committed to supporting the education and teaching community, supporting innovation and excellence, especially for early career members starting on a teaching track.
Each application will be considered by two peer reviewers identified by The Society.

Terms and conditions
- The proposed project must support physiology teaching of a novel nature.
- The applicant’s host institution must be willing to administer the award.
- Funds must be used within 12 months of the grant award date.
- The resource you develop be made available to The Society for wider dissemination.
- Resources should acknowledge the Society’s support. As standard this should feature our logo accompanied by the words ‘Supported by’.
- The Physiological Society logo must be displayed in all conference presentations and The Physiological Society must be acknowledged in all publications with the Unique Grant Identification number provided.
- Project outputs cannot be used for commercial gain.
- Funds cannot be used to buy out teaching time.
- Funding cannot be used to support the applicant’s salary costs or to attend conferences.
- If applicants propose creating new educational resources, any resources produced should be suitable for inclusion in the Society’s member-only Training Hub.
- Successful applicants will be asked to submit an end of grant report and a financial audit of spending no later than three months after the end of the grant. If such a report is not submitted the holder will be deemed ineligible for any other funding from The Physiological Society. Any funds not used at the end of the grant period must be returned to The Society.
- Successful applicants will be asked to submit an abstract related to the project output to a Physiological Society or Society-sponsored meeting.
- This award will not be reimbursed to any members with an outstanding balance or direct debit arrears on their record. All arrears must be cleared for claims to be paid.
