Research and Knowledge Exchange Award

To support members wishing to conduct pilot studies, develop a new technique or to finalise a project, as well as supporting activities to promote knowledge transfer and impact.

Who can apply?

  • Full Members not in a permanent position i.e. postdoctoral researchers. NB members must have at least 12 months left on their contract from grant award date. PhD students are not eligible to apply.
  • Full Members who are less than three years into their first permanent academic position from grant award date. The three years does not include any period of parental leave taken.
  • Members returning to a permanent position after a career break.

All applicants must be based at an institution in the UK or Republic of Ireland.

Applicants must be current members of The Physiological Society and hold a minimum of 2 years’ consecutive membership.

How much funding is available?

Up to £10,000 per award. 

What can the funding be used for?

The funding can be used to conduct pilot studies, develop a new technique or to finalise a project, as well as supporting activities to promote knowledge transfer and impact. The award is able to part-fund larger projects if justified. 

The Society is committed to showcasing the variety and value of knowledge exchange activity to members and you can find relevant case studies in this report. Such projects could help: 

  • Test the practical application of your research 
  • Gain insights into a new area of research 
  • Gain knowledge about practical problems useful for teaching 

Each application will be considered by two peer reviewers identified by The Society.

How do I apply?

Please read the eligibility, terms and conditions and scoring criteria carefully. Applicants who do not meet the eligibility will not be considered for the award. Please click the Apply button.

  • Applications should be physiological in nature.
  • The applicant’s host institution must be willing to administer the award.
  • Funds must be used within 12 months of the grant award date.
  • Animal costs, experimental consumables, and small equipment purchases (excluding PCs) are permitted.
  • Consumables for projects undertaken by PhD, MRes or summer students are allowable.
  • Funding cannot be used to support salary costs or to attend conferences.
  • Successful applicants must acknowledge the TPS funding in all their research activities which relate to the award. For example, the TPS logo must be displayed in all conference presentations and the TPS must be acknowledged in all publications with the Unique Grant Identification number provided.
  • Successful applicants will be asked to submit an end of grant report and a financial audit of spending no later than three months after the end of the grant. If such a report is not submitted the holder will be deemed ineligible for any other funding from The Physiological Society. Any funds not used at the end of the grant period must be returned to The Society.
  • Successful applicants will be asked to submit an abstract related to the project output to a Physiological Society or Society-sponsored meeting.
  • This award will not be reimbursed to any members with an outstanding balance or direct debit arrears on their record. All arrears must be cleared for claims to be paid.
