Andrew Packard

(1929 – 2023)

The Society is sad to hear of the death of Andrew Packard, who died on 16 June 2023 at the age of 94. He was a zoologist, and a nerve and muscle physiologist, who had been active in the field since the 1950s. He is best known for his research on cephalopods, studying octopuses, squid and cuttlefish to investigate the brain and behaviour. He applied his background in functional autonomy and humanities to examine adaptation in all the senses. He published theories of behavioural evolution, and contributed to the debate that feelings played a role as agents of selection in the role of behaviour. Andrew was a Reader in Physiology at Edinburgh University, Scotland; Professor of Zoology at Naples Zoological Station, Italy; and a Research Affiliate at Hopkins Marine Station, Stanford University, US.
