Students earning bachelor’s degrees in Biology at Eastern Washington University are required to take two courses with research projects, one near the beginning of the program and one during the senior year. BIOL 270, Biological Investigation, focuses on a group research project which may address any biological question. Lectures support the research activities as they progress through the term, and include biological literature, ethical review, hypothesis testing, data collection and analysis, writing a research article, and oral presentation. BIOL 490, Senior Capstone, has options which include Animal Physiology. The course lectures focus on animal physiology, while the lab consists of group research projects in which students design, conduct, analyze, and present research on topics in animal physiology. This presentation will explain how these courses are administered. Benefits, successes, challenges, and difficulties will be addressed. Examples of successful research projects from both courses will be described, using a wide variety of animals.
