The Society is encouraging Members to give their support to the online science action network established recently by Understanding Animal Research.
Many of our Members work with animals and in doing so invariably meet the highest standards of welfare and make all possible efforts to implement the three ‘R’s: Reduction, Refinement and Replacement.
Yet this remains a hot topic, with many spurious and misinformed claims made online.
We want you to add your voice to the positive message. Sign up to our social media channels – Twitter (@ThePhySoc), Facebook and LinkedIn – and look out for the hashtag #ARnonsense.
By retweeting and sharing, you can quickly and easily make sure that the voice of science is heard and contribute to increasing public understanding.
We hope that many of you will go further, commenting on sites disseminating dubious messages about research, emailing misinformed editors, and answering queries online. We are currently asking for Members to comment on a page carrying a petition against animal research to explain to those visiting the page the high standards of animal welfare and the regulation that supports it, the commitment of the scientific community to the three Rs, and the massive progress in understanding physiology and disease made through animal research.
Dr Tony Causey, Interim Chief Executive of Understanding Animal Research, said: “We need your help to provide accurate information about animal research. We want to make sure that those speaking for research are those who understand the research.”
