Tuesday 21 July, 14:00 – 15:00 BST

Organised by Pete Aldiss, University of Edinburgh, UK and Jo Lewis, University of Cambridge, UK

Obesity and metabolic syndrome are associated with fat infiltration of skeletal muscle leading to poor muscle quality, strength and function, in addition to inflammation. Eating well and exercising have a myriad of health benefits but when is it best to eat or exercise?

Rob Edinburgh (University of Bath, UK) looked at how changing the timing of our meals in relation to when we exercise can alter the health benefits associated with exercise. Brendan Gabriel (University of Aberdeen, UK and Karolinska Institutet, Sweden) explored skeletal muscle metabolism and the interaction with the timing of exercise to combat metabolic disease.

This was part of the ‘Physiology of Obesity: From Mechanisms to Medicine’ series.

Hear from Early Career Researchers as they explore the molecular, cellular, and neural mechanisms, as well as behavioural aspects, underlying obesity.
