Wednesday 17 March, 16:00 – 16:45 GMT

Networking session: 16:45- 17:15 GMT

Paper discussed: A physiological model of the inflammatory‐thermal‐pain‐cardiovascular interactions during an endotoxin challenge (Dobreva A, Brady‐Nicholls R, Larripa K, Puelz C, Mehlsen J, Olufsen MS.The Journal of Physiology; DOI: 10.1113/JP280883)

In this Virtual Journal Club, host Dr Henry Sutanto (Maastricht University, Netherlands) discussed the manuscript with the authors Dr Renee Brady-Nicholls and Professor Mette S. Olufsen (North Carolina State University, USA). The host introduced the selected paper and his reasons for selecting it from scientific and clinical perspectives. Afterward, the senior author Professor Mette S. Olufsen gave a short presentation on the background, methods, and key findings of the study. The panel then discussed the potential applications of the newly developed in silico model to unravel the complex interactions between systemic inflammation and human physiology, particularly cardiovascular dynamics. Existing challenges and future directions of both the study and the model were discussed.

Dr Eleonora Grandi (University of California, Davis, USA), a Fellow on the Editorial Board of The Journal of Physiology, joined the panel discussion to advise on the key factors that made this study to the publishable standards of The Journal.
