Fifty pairs of mother and Cord blood from women with normal delivery were studied. Haemorheologic and fibrinolytic indices comprising of Packed Cell Volume (PCV), Relative Plasma Whole Blood Viscosities (RPV and RWBV), Heamoglobulin Lysis Time and Plasma Fibrinogen (PFC) were analysed with standard techniques. Student t- test was used for statistical analysis. We observed significant increases in cord blood values of RWBV and PFC when compared with that of controls (P<0.05 respectively), while there were no significant difference in PCV, RPV and ELT (P<0.05 respectively). The maternal blood samples showed a statistically significant decrease in PCV, RPV and Fibrinolytic index (increased ELT) (P<0.05), while PFC showed a significant increase (P<0.05) when compared with control. Also, there were significant decreases in maternal values of PCV, RWBV and Fibrinolytic index (P<0.05 respectively) when compared with cord values but RPV and PFC exhibited statistical increases in (P<0.05). We concluded that increased plasma values of PFC and RPV are consistent physiological changes in pregnant women progressive term while the increase in cord blood could also be associated with fetal neonatal physiology. The decreased fibrnolytic activity in mothers could be regarded as a protective mechanism against post partum haemorrhage.
