That’s another Physiology Friday done and dusted, and what a great one at that!
For those of you who perhaps missed it (where were you!), Friday 13 October, was our 5th Physiology Friday, our annual celebration of physiology as part of The Royal Society of Biology’s Biology Week. Members near and far joined in by shining a light on physiology in schools, in labs, with students, with the public and, well, anyone who would listen!
The day saw events not only all over the UK, but also in Ghana, the US, Canada, Ireland and Pakistan, making it truly an international party. Over 25 events took place, from visits to schools, department-wide celebrations, quizzes, pop-up shows, and wiki edit-a-thons, with physiologists from every stage of their career taking part.
Our hashtag #PhysiologyFriday was mentioned 338 times, from 129 different users, with snaps and commentary about their day.
Physiology Friday would of course not be complete without our annual physiology baking competition, The Bio-Bodies Bake Off, or as it’s commonly known #Biobakes.
We received 75 bakes and crowned Ailyn Myles from Coedcae School the winner of our Physiologist Choice category for her cake Kidneys showing the nephrons, Elinor Haworth from Ellesmere College the winner of the Baker’s Choice category for her eyeball cake, Eye live my life through a lens. Following our public vote, which received 2740 votes, the voice of the public was heard, and it named Georgina Winsey from St Helen & St Katharine school the Public Choice winner with her cake The Brain Cake. Take a look at the shortlisted cakes on our public choice voting page (now closed) and the full album of 2017 entries on our Facebook page.
If people still weren’t sure about what exactly physiology is after all that, we tried to help with our new ‘what is physiology’ animation.

Just because Physiology Friday is over, it doesn’t mean you have to stop the celebration, every day is an opportunity to engage a child, friend, family member, or colleague.
