ACT NOW TO PROTECT HEALTH AND SAVE LIVES IN THE FACE OF RISING TEMPERATURES.

Join us in Parliament on 12 June as organisations from across the scientific, health and policy spectrum launch our consensus statement on a Roadmap to Global Heat Health Resilience.

Now a UK General Election has been called, it is more important than ever that we come together to make the case for action in this area.

The event will take place on the terrace of the Houses of Parliament, overlooking the Thames. Following the election announcement, the event will now include a panel session focused on the priorities for the next government to protect health and save lives from rising heat.

The panel discussion will be followed by a buffet lunch and the opportunity to network with scientific researchers, funders and policymakers. We will also hear from those impacted around the world by rising heat. The event will also feature a series of ‘research booths’ to showcase the research being done at the climate and health nexus.

Why is this consensus statement important?

Climate change is the greatest health threat facing humanity. Extreme heat periods are becoming intense, longer and more frequent. Everyone is at risk, but especially those vulnerable due to either reduced physiological capacity to cope with extreme temperatures or living and working in environments that are inappropriate for the rising temperatures.

Whoever wins the UK election, we are just weeks away from a new government and many new MPs. The launch of our consensus statement could not have come at a more urgent time. Across the world, decision makers must adopt a human-centred approach to tackling this challenge.

Our consensus statement calls on governments and agencies to recognise the challenge rising temperatures are presenting to human health across the world and the impact they have across a range of policy areas. We support the development of heat resilience strategies to focus on medium- and long-term preparation for rising heat, with coordinated activity at local, national and international levels.

Why attend?

  • Advocate for the next UK government to make action in this area a priority.
  • Show your support for improving long term preparedness for rising heat and for tackling the health impacts of climate change.
  • Make new contacts by networking over lunch with researchers, funders and policymakers.
  • Hear from experts and funders and discuss the latest scientific research in the field.
  • Improve interdisciplinary collaboration as we bring together experts from a range of fields such as physiology, climatology, engineering, architecture, healthcare, urban planning.
  • Shape policy priorities through our Q&A with policymakers, funders and other expert organisations working in the climate and health arena.

Who should attend?

  • Representatives from organisations working at the interface of climate change, health and heat.
  • Scientific researchers in the field of physiology, climate impacts and heat.
  • Policymakers who make decisions about how to respond to climate change and extreme heat.
  • Public health officials and healthcare workers who are planning how to support healthy lives in extreme heat.
  • Funders who support research and development in the area of climate and health.
