Physiologists work in a variety of roles, sectors, and settings to advance our understanding of how the body works. On completing a PhD, it is natural to start to explore different career options that could best match your interests and skillset.

During this webinar we heard from physiologists who have followed different career trajectories in industry, teaching and healthcare, and gained an insight into how they transitioned into these areas. There were also opportunities to submit questions to the panel.

This webinar was a follow up to a webinar we ran earlier in the year on “Career pathways in academia and beyond” which focused on career planning.

Teresa Thomas, senior lecturer in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Birmingham, UK, spoke about how her career has evolved to solely focus on teaching and educational activities, and pedagogical research.

Aidan Karr, Trainee Gastrointestinal Physiologist at Mercy University Hospital, Cork, Ireland, discussed his decision to explore a clinical role after his PhD and career options in this area.

Siobhan Dennis, Business Partnership Manager at the University of Oxford, UK, talked about her transition into industry following her PhD, as well as career working in the academic, pharmaceutical, health tech and health care industries.

Learning outcomes:

  • To gain an insight into careers in industry, education and teaching, and healthcare
