Paper discussed: Oxygenation pattern and compensatory responses to hypoxia and hypercapnia following bilateral carotid body resection in humans (Piotr Niewinski, Stanislaw Tubek, Julian F. R. Paton, Waldemar Banasiak, Piotr Ponikowski) The Journal of Physiology; DOI: 10.1113/JP281319

The Journal of Physiology’s Virtual Journal Club meets on the first and third Wednesday of each month. You can find out more about the Virtual Journal Club here.

In this Virtual Journal Club, host Dr Antenor Rodrigues discussed the manuscript with author Dr Piotr Niewinski. The host introduced the selected paper and his reasons for selecting it. Dr Niewinski then explained the rationale, methodology and the major findings of the study. The panel discussed the implications of their findings in the context of heart failure and the risk of desaturation during mild hypoxia, similar to that experienced during long-haul air travel and high-altitude.

Professor Harold Schultz, from the Editorial Board of The Journal of Physiology advised on the key factors that made this study to the publishable standards of The Journal.

Host: Dr Antenor Rodrigues

University of Toronto, Canada

Dr Piotr Niewinski

Wroclaw Medical University, Poland (Author)

Professor Harold Schultz

University of Nebraska College Medicine, Omaha, USA (Reviewing Editor)

A 30-minute networking session took place after the Virtual Journal Club meeting where attendees had the opportunity to meet and reflect on the conversations during the meeting.
