As physiologists, one key question for our study design must be “am I using the correct model for my research question?” With a plethora of animal models, in vitro experiments, and the growing use of in silico modelling, this choice is fundamental to ensure that the data produced are relevant both physiologically and therapeutically.
In 2018, The Society held a two-day meeting on Experimental Models in Physiology, where speakers spoke openly and honestly about the advantages and disadvantages of their chosen model and challenged our thinking about some of the more popular animal models. The importance of choosing animals that most closely resembled human physiology, disease or specific condition is of paramount importance and this message was also relayed back to the funding bodies.
In a timely revisit to this critical question, this one-day online symposium on Experimental Models in Physiology has a fantastic line-up of speakers who will once again reflect on this dilemma and provide expert insight into their current models of choice. They will give thought-provoking talks followed by panel discussions with a chance for you to pose questions. There will also be time for oral communications, giving you the opportunity to present your own research in the area. We look forward to seeing you at what we anticipate will be a lively and thought-provoking event!
