KW Ranatunga

The Society regrets to announce the death of KW Ranatunga, who died on 28 May 2023. He studied zoology at the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka before completing his PhD in physiology at the University of Bristol, UK. He continued his career in academia, returning to University of Colombo and then going onto the University of Malaya, Malaysia and the University of Pennsylvania, US. KW returned to the University of Bristol, where he devoted over 20 years to carrying out research and committing his time to teaching physiology until he retired in 2008. His research was focused on studying the mechanism of skeletal muscle contraction, using temperature perturbation effects, from molecular to in situ muscle. He published 174 papers covering research into muscle physiology and function, strength and conditioning and exercise performance. He was a long standing member of The Society and served as editor for The Society’s journal Experimental Physiology.
