Institutional Engagement Award

 

Provides funding to support Society Representatives and members to host events at their organisation, including internal conferences, teaching symposia, seminars or outreach events.

Who can apply?

 

Applications must be supported by a Society Representative or a Fellow.

 

Applicants should be a member and should have been a member for two or more years at the point of application.  

 

Applicants should be from an institution that has three or more active members of The Society. 

 

Recipients of an Institutional Engagement Award in previous years must have completed a report form to be considered for another Institutional Engagement Award.  

 

The Society will look favourably upon applications that have secured matched funding from the host institution, as well as those that promote The Society and physiology. 

 

How much funding is available?

 

Members can apply for up to £500 

 

Only one Institutional Engagement Award may be awarded per institution per calendar year.

What can the funding be used for?

 

Funding will be available for a range of activities deemed suitable by The Society. The events should aim to promote The Society and physiology. 

 

Examples of events The Society would be in scope for funding:   

 

  • Physiological teaching symposia 
  • Community outreach events  
  • Research colloquia series, in-person or online, with academic speakers  
  • Internal conferences 
  • Seminar series  
  • Departmental seminars, lectures and workshops  
  • Annual forums 
  • Outreach conventions for potential Society members 
  • Hosting an activity for Physiology Week (November 2025)  

 

Applications must detail how the funding will benefit The Society and promote physiology, how the activity will encourage engagement and how (if applicable) it will benefit the public and the inclusivity of members. 

 

Please note The Society will not fund the catering of events.

When can I apply?

 

Applications for this award will open Tuesday 26 August and will close on Friday 26 September.

 

 

Only one Institutional Engagement Award may be awarded per institution per calendar year. If you were awarded an Institutional Engagement Award during our first application round, earlier in 2025, you will not be eligible for this application round.

How will the applications will be scored?

 

The Institutional Engagement Award will be scored by a panel of reviewers. This will be based on the following scoring criteria:

 

  • The aims and potential impact of the proposed event
  • How the event may support the promotion of The Society and physiology in clear and measurable ways
  • A demonstrated need for the funding requested and whether any other funding has been secured
  • Potential opportunities the event may have for membership recruitment OR if, public focused, opportunities to reach underrepresented groups
  • How the outcomes and impact of the event may be measured

Please read the eligibility listed above and the terms and conditions listed below carefully. Applicants who do not meet the eligibility will not be considered for the Institutional Engagement Award. 

  • Applications must be supported by a Society Representative or a Fellow. 
  • Applications must be received by the deadlines laid out above. Applications not received in this timeframe will not be considered. Applications will only be considered if their events take place after the application window closes.  
  • Applicants must display The Society’s logo and, if appropriate, promote The Society on social media pages during the event.  
  • Successful applicants will arrange for their institution to issue an invoice to The Society, for the payment of funds. The Institutional Engagement Award cannot be paid direct to an individual/personal account.  
  • Funding cannot be used to support salary costs or to attend conferences.  
  • The Institutional Engagement Award will not be reimbursed to any members with an outstanding balance or direct debit arrears on their record. All arrears must be cleared for claims to be paid. 
  • Applicants will ensure that awarded funds are claimed within the same calendar year, funds cannot be carried into the next calendar year. Applicants should be paid within three months of when the event took place.  
  • Successful applicants will be asked to submit a report along with expense/detail of funding spent. If such a report is not submitted the holder will be deemed ineligible for any other funding from The Society. Please see other eligibility above.  
  • Any funds not used must be returned to The Society. 
  • The decision of the awarding panel is final.   
  • The Board of Trustees has a commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion when seeking suitable candidates for the Institutional Engagement Award.
