Brain stimulation in conscious man – John Rothwell (p.40)

There is a long history of attempts to bypass the barrier of the skull in order to stimulate the brain beneath. Indeed, the first demonstration of brain stimulation in man by Bartholow in 1875, was made on a patient in whom an ulcer had eroded the skull so severely that a large portion of the brain was clearly visible around the central areas of cortex.
