Starling’s Hypothesis – The Prologue – Charles Michel (p.23)

1996 marks the centenary of Starling’s paper on ‘The absorption of fluids from the connective tissue spaces’ (Starling, 1896). Here he suggested that differences in the hydrostatic and protein osmotic pressures across capillary walls determine the direction and magnitude of fluid movements between the blood and the tissues.
