After careful consideration and analysis, The Society has now purchased new premises. We have exchanged contracts and the purchase will be completed on 20 June. This represents the culmination of a year’s work by Council and the Task Force they established. The property is at 30-32 Farringdon Lane, Clerkenwell, in London.
This will be the first time in its history that The Society has owned the property it occupies and the move promises significant benefits, including:
- Accessibility – the new premises is situated near Farringdon Station, which is already easily accessible from all mainline rail stations and is a terminal for Crossrail, scheduled to open in 2018
- Supporting our activities – we will be able to host scientific and other meetings of up to 75 people, host all our Council, Committee and Editorial Board meetings on site, and similarly support our education and outreach activities
- Reduced overall cost – we shall be able to sub-let two floors and this, along with allowing for external hire of meetings rooms when not in use, will create significant savings on our current annual office costs.
Society President, Mike Spyer, said: “It is very exciting to be taking this step – a massive first for The Society.
“It speaks volumes for the strength of The Society that we are able to do this now, and it also bodes very well for our future to secure an investment in a London property.
“The new premises will provide not just office space for the administration of our Society, as before, but also a real home for physiology. Members and partners will visit and become familiar with the new property, and The Society will be stronger for it.”
A move from current offices off Gray’s Inn Road to the new premises on nearby Farringdon Lane is planned for Winter 2012.
There will be further details in the Summer edition of Physiology News, as well as information at the Annual General Meeting in Edinburgh.
