The Physiological Society today launches its new five year strategy to deliver on its vision of a world in which physiological discovery leads to healthier lives.
The Society’s bold new strategy sets out its mission to:
- Increase the visibility of physiology as essential to tackling global challenges and act as catalyst for the dissemination of knowledge.
- Champion equity, inclusion and diversity.
- Forge a sustainable future for The Society.
The Society will focus on three strategic pillars, centred around strengthening the physiology community, securing the future of the discipline and using physiological evidence to improve public health.
In order to deliver on these, the new strategy identifies five strategic priorities for the next five years:
- We will have a larger and more diverse membership community.
- We will be essential to physiologists developing their career.
- We will strengthen our links at key interfaces of physiology and between sectors.
- We will play an influential role in shaping funding and public policy.
- We will be a forward-looking, sustainable Society.
Launching The Society’s new Strategy at the annual Member Forum, Chief Executive Dariel Burdass said:
“I am delighted to launch this bold, forward-looking strategy for The Physiological Society.
“During this strategy period, The Society will pass a major milestone as we celebrate our 150 year anniversary. While the world of today looks very different to that of 1876, our core purpose remains unchanged: to support and inspire our community to advance the physiological sciences.
“While as an organisation we have never stood still, the pace of change in the world around us is now greater than ever and demands a step change in how we operate to meet the challenges we will face. Our ambitious new strategy builds on our successes, addresses challenges, and sets us on a course to grow stronger in the future.
“Our new strategy outlines a clear vision for a world in which physiological discovery leads to healthier lives. Harnessing the power of our community and working together by publishing in our leading journals, taking part in our world class scientific events, influential policy work and inspiring engagement activities, The Society’s ambitious strategy is highly achievable.
“We have put equity, diversity and inclusion at the heart of our new strategy so that all physiologists feel at home and supported as part of our thriving community.
“We are proud of history while relentlessly focused on the future. From climate change to healthy ageing, the future will be shaped by physiology. This new strategy is our call to action for all physiologists and all those invested in this better future: come and help us change the word.”
