The Physiological Society congratulates Professor Luis Sobrevia FTPS on his election as an ordinary member of the International Science Council (ISC) Governing Board.
Professor Sobrevia, a Fellow of The Physiological Society and IUPS Representative to the Americas, is one of five new ordinary members elected to the Board who will formally take up the role this month.
The International Science Council brings together scientific organisations from across disciplines and regions, with a mission to act as a global voice for science and promote science as a global public good. Its work convenes scientific expertise around issues of importance to both science and society.
The appointment provides an important opportunity for physiology to contribute to these global conversations and to strengthen connections between scientific communities internationally. Professor Sobrevia has spoken particularly about his ambition to build stronger links between The Physiological Society, the International Union of Physiological Sciences (IUPS), the ISC and scientific communities across Latin America and beyond.
Reflecting on his election, Professor Sobrevia said:
“I am particularly proud to take on this responsibility as a Fellow of The Physiological Society and as IUPS Regional Representative for the Americas. I hope that my participation in the ISC Governing Board may also open new opportunities for TPS, through stronger connections with the ISC, greater visibility in global science-policy discussions, and new possibilities for collaboration with scientific communities across the Americas and other regions.”
During his term, Professor Sobrevia hopes to champion rigorous, open, independent, and inclusive science, while creating more opportunities for scientific communities and early career researchers who have more limited access to international networks and resources. His ambitions closely connect with the ISC’s vision of science as a global public good.
We congratulate Professor Sobrevia on his election and look forward to seeing the contribution he will make to strengthening international scientific collaboration and the visibility of physiology on the global stage.
