The Physiological Society and the American Physiological Society are delighted to announce the new Editor-in-Chief of Physiological Reports, Professor Josephine (“Jo”) Adams. Jo succeeds Professor Tom Kleyman.
Jo completed her Ph.D. at the Institute of Cancer Research, University of London, UK followed by post-doctoral training at Imperial Cancer Research Fund London and EMBO and HFSP fellowships at the Vascular Research Division, Department of Pathology, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Harvard University, USA.
In 1994, she became a Wellcome Trust Senior Fellow in Basic Biomedical Research and set up her own research laboratory at the MRC-Laboratory for Cell Biology, University College London (UCL), with honorary appointments as Lecturer, then Reader in Molecular Cell Biology, in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at UCL. From 2002 she was a staff member in the Department of Cell Biology, Lerner Research Institute, Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, Ohio, rising to Professor of Molecular Medicine.
Professor Adams’ laboratory has researched metazoan cell interactions with extracellular matrix, with emphasis on the identification of basic cellular mechanisms and the application of interdisciplinary approaches to examine functional roles in tumour progression and metastasis, fibrosis, and smooth muscle cell function. Research topics include extracellular matrix activities in actin cytoskeletal organization and cell motility, nucleocytoplasmic communication, and extracellular matrix assembly and organisation. The evolution of extracellular matrix is also an interest of the laboratory. The research has received grant support from the Wellcome Trust, Medical Research Council-UK, National Institutes of Health, USA, British Heart Foundation and other agencies. In 2009 Professor Adams joined the School of Biochemistry, University of Bristol, UK, as Professor of Cell Biology. She is now Emeritus Professor of Cell Biology at School of Biochemistry, University of Bristol, UK.
Jo has held multiple editorial roles, including serving as an Associate Editor at Molecular Biology of the Cell, Reviews Editor for the International Journal of Biochemistry and Cell Biology and as a member of the Editorial Committee of Physiological Reviews. From July 2014 to 2021 she served as the Editor-in-Chief of AJP-Cell Physiology.

Speaking about her new appointment as Editor-in-Chief of Physiological Reports, Jo said:
I am honoured and delighted to be appointed as the new Editor-in-Chief for Physiological Reports. Building on the great work of the first ten years under the Editorships of Professor Sue Wray and Professor Tom Kleyman, my vision is to promote the Journal as a forum for sound science to a global community of physiologists and to increase the visibility of articles published in Physiological Reports, whilst maintaining a broad scope of content and high standards of services to authors.
