AI, health and physiological insight

In 2023, The Physiological Society undertook a project and associated report called From ‘Black Box’ to Trusted Healthcare Tools which explored physiology’s role in unlocking the potential of artificial intelligence for health.

The report made a series of recommendations for Government and The Society to deliver in pursuit of the inclusion of physiological evidence in the development of AI tools that will lead to improved trust in, and applicability of, AI in healthcare.

Framework for Physiology and AI

One of these recommendations was for The Society to establish a Physiology & AI framework. This Framework will set out principles for physiologically plausible technologies to establish guardrails around AI and health by identifying how to integrate physiological measurements and expertise into technology development and testing, prior to deployment in healthcare settings.

Society Taskforce

To achieve this, The Society is inviting physiologists and AI specialists to join its AI & Physiology Taskforce. Co-Chaired by Dr Lalarukh Haris Shaikh and Dr Richard Siow, the Taskforce’s work will build on the findings of The Society’s report but also use concepts and learnings from other organisations exploring how their discipline or purpose can ethically and securely harness the innovations promised by AI.

The Society will be convening the Taskforce for the first time in late March or early April. If you would like to join the Taskforce or have any questions about the project, please express your interest.
