You will be an active senior research or teaching physiologist, biomedical/life scientist or senior clinician/vet, and work at an advanced level for: a recognised academic institution, industry, or the healthcare sector. You will be eligible to use the FPhysiol designation. See our list of current fellows.

Fellows continue to receive discounted registration at most Society meetings, funding for travel, research and outreach, as well as occasional Fellows events. 

You will also be supporting the next generation of physiologists, with a portion of your subscription costs being set aside for Early Career Researcher initiatives. 

Fellowship costs £120, an increase of £30 for Members. 

What do I need to do?

To apply, you will need to fill in an online application, and demonstrate that you satisfy the following criteria:

  • Having been a member of The Society for 10 years continuously,
  • Having actively engaged in The Society and its activities, (e.g. as session chair, competition judge, Theme Lead, Society Representative, meeting/symposium organiser, outreach volunteer, policy contributor, Committee Member, Editorial Board member etc.),

and either

  • Having published at least 20 papers in a relevant peer-reviewed physiology or life science journal,


  • Demonstrating leadership and innovation in physiology teaching and education. 

You will need to include details of a professional referee, who can confirm your status in a professional capacity.

All applications will be reviewed by the Membership & Grants Committee and any unsuccessful applicants will be notified and given the opportunity to review their supporting evidence and resubmit. 

All members are required to adhere to our Membership Code of Professional Conduct.

You can still apply now if your membership renewal is not due. Once you submit your application, you will be taken through to the payment page. Ensure you select the ‘Pay Later’ option and continue through the basket.

If your application is successful you will not need to make a payment until your membership renewal is due, at which point you will pay the increased Fellow rate.

If you are a Retired Member, you can submit an application to become a Fellow; if your application is successful you will be elected to Fellow (retired) status. You will continue to access all benefits, including those specific to Fellowship, without the need to pay an annual subscription.
