Membership changes

For 150 years, our members have been the lifeblood of the Physiological Society. As part of the celebrations to mark our 150th milestone anniversary, in 2026, the Society will be introducing a new membership model. This is designed to recognise the vital role Full Members play in our community and to make membership more accessible and inclusive for the future.

The two main changes are:

  • A special thank you: Reduced membership fees

From 2026, membership fees across all categories will be halved. This means that the previous system of discounted rates, for example, for members in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) or other concessionary groups, will be removed. Instead, there will now be one single, reduced global rate per membership category, ensuring that every member benefits equally from the same lower fee.
This change reflects our commitment to supporting members worldwide and easing financial pressures in today’s challenging climate—so you can continue to enjoy all the benefits of being part of our vibrant community.

  • Introducing a new Associate Member category
We are also launching a new Associate Member category, designed to welcome qualified individuals into the Society while helping grow our community. This new category complements our Full Members and supports our strategy for growth and inclusion. It will help us strengthen the future pipeline of members and extend the Society’s reach.

Associate Member

Eligibility: Associate Members must meet the same eligibility and qualification criteria as Full Members.

Role: The category will be non-voting, with a distinct set of reduced benefits compared to Full Members. Compare all member categories.

Cost: Free, giving eligible individuals a flexible way to engage with the Society.

We hope that current Full Members (including retired Full Members) will wish to retain their Full Membership status and the additional benefits this brings. However, you will also have the option to transfer to the new Associate category at your renewal in 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the Society changing the membership model?
As we celebrate our 150th Anniversary, we want to ensure that every member—especially those just starting their careers—feels supported and valued. Our new membership model is designed to make joining the Society easier, fairer and more affordable for everyone. By halving fees and creating a single global rate for each category, we are removing barriers and opening the door wider to physiologists at all stages. This change reflects our commitment to building an inclusive, vibrant community where members can grow, connect and thrive long into the future.

By introducing the new category of Associate Member, we also recognise the vital contribution of our Full Members, while supporting our long-term commitment to inclusivity, sustainability and the continued growth of our international community.

What is happening to membership fees?
From 2026, standard fees for every paid category will be halved. There will be one global rate per category with no separate concessionary rates.

When do these changes take effect?
From 1 January 2026, the membership fee for all paid member categories (apart from those paying concessionary rates) will be reduced to 50% of the 2025 rate for anyone joining or renewing after this date.

From the same date, new eligible members may join the Associate category, and existing Full members may choose to renew their membership under this category if they wish.

I am currently a Full Member. How do I become an Associate Member?
At your next renewal point you can switch to an Associate Member. Please email the Membership Team at membership@physoc.org in advance of your renewal to do this. Please note that the Society cannot issue refunds for membership, so it is important you contact us before your renewal payment is taken.

What conference discounts are available to Associate Members and existing member categories?
Members in our paid categories receive the highest level of conference discounts. Associate Members are also eligible for discounted pricing, though at a reduced rate, ensuring all members can access valuable learning and networking opportunities.

Why isn’t the Associate Member category open to undergraduates or postgraduate students?
We really valued the contributions students make to our Society. Our new member rates mean undergraduates and masters students can join the Society for only £5.50/year and postgraduates for only £17.50/year. The new Associate Member category is targeted at those eligible for Full Membership (which includes early career physiologists) as they are identified in our strategy as key targets for member growth.

Why remove concessionary and LMIC discounts?
Because everyone will now benefit from the same lower fee, wherever they live or work.

What is the new Associate Member category?
It is a free category for people who meet the same eligibility criteria as Full Members but do not need voting rights or the full suite of benefits.

Can current Full Members move to the Associate category?
Yes. You can choose to transfer at your 2026 renewal if you prefer.

What are the benefits of staying a Full Member?
You keep all existing rights and benefits, including access to our grant schemes and enhanced discounts for our events, as well as supporting the running of the Society by voting and standing for Trustee roles.

Do Fellows benefit from the changes?
Yes. Fellows will also see their fees halved under the new global rate.

Who can I contact with questions?
You can email membershipchange@physoc.org with any queries.
