Excellence in Physiology Award
The Physiological Society’s Excellence in Physiology Award honours excellence in physiology at institutions that are centres of excellence for physiology in either discovery or leadership.
This award is presented by the Board of Trustees following recommendation from the Nominations Committee.
2023: The University of Portsmouth’s Extreme Environments Laboratory (EEL)

Life-saving physiological research has taken centre stage at an event to celebrate the University of Portsmouth’s Extreme Environments Laboratory (EEL).
Earlier this year the EEL became the first institute to be given the inaugural Excellence in Physiology Award.
This prestigious honour serves to commemorate the EEL’s work influencing global search, rescue and out of hospital practices and policies, as well as improving both athlete and occupational safety in extreme environments.
To mark the accolade, a plaque was unveiled at the University’s School of Sport, Health and Exercise Science today (7 December), which is home to the Extreme Environment Laboratories.

2024:Celebrating world-leading public health and sports performance research in Loughborough

The School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences (SSEHS) have been awarded the ‘Excellence in Physiology Award’ from The Physiological Society.
This prestigious award commemorates the internationally renowned research at SSEHS, which has resulted in significant improvements to public health initiatives and sports performance worldwide.
To mark the accolade, a plaque was unveiled on 20 June 2024 by Professor Clyde Williams at the University’s Clyde Williams Building, which is home to the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences.
