Birthday bunting and party hats

The Society's 150th birthday was celebrated in style by members around the world with Lab Lunches

During the week commencing 30 March 2026, members and colleagues gathered to discuss physiology over a shared meal, just as Sir John Scott Burdon-Sanderson and our founders did all those years ago.

As you celebrated this historic anniversary, you considered how to push the boundaries of discovery. Our Editors-in-Chief put forward three thought-provoking questions to inspire discussion, reflection, and fresh ideas for the future of physiology:

  • How should physiology evolve to study complex, real-world biology rather than isolated systems?
  • How can physiology better inform major societal challenges we face such as climate change, and health inequality?
  • How does the study of physiology provide a unique framework for understanding how environmental conditions affect biological systems across multiple levels of organisation?

Here are a few of your celebratory posts you shared on social media of your events. View our gallery for more of your wonderful photos.

It all started in a London townhouse in 1876…

On 31 March 1876, a group of physiologists came together with a shared vision to establish the Physiological Society. It was in the home of Sir John Scott Burdon-Sanderson that 19 physiologists gathered to promote the advancement of physiology and facilitate the intercourse of physiologists. Once the Society was formed and the rules agreed, the inaugural dinner was soon held at the Criterion Restaurant in May 1876. Discover more about Burdon-Sanderson.

A resilient and thriving Society since 1876

“If we continue to be successful in demonstrating the impactful contribution physiology can make to a wide range of critical societal issues, physiologists should be recognised for the crucial contribution they can make to life changing issues.”

For our 150th anniversary celebrations, Professor Mike Tipton, President of the Physiological Society, shares his thoughts on the Society’s community and the vital role of physiology and physiologists, now and in the future, in addressing global issues from health to climate change.
